Manuscript Summary
This large-format breviary from the diocese of Constance contains liturgical texts from the end of the eleventh to the fifteenth century. The older part, in Carolingian minuscule with early-romanesque initials and neumes over the chants was probably produced in a Constance scriptorium. In the fifteenth century, the manuscript was expanded with a calendar, new entries in the sanctoral and additional hymns, adding several quires and requiring the volume to be rebound. Among the manuscript’s particularities include an Easter Play (ca. 1100), neumes in modal notation, and historical additions concerning the destruction of the monastery of Rorschach (1489/90). Numerous liturgical additions and ownership marks attest to the manuscript’s use in the church of Güttingen, to which the breviary came in the fifteenth century through the family Tettikofer. The manuscript was in Kreuzlingen ca. 1700 at the latest, and since 1858 has been in the Cantonal Library of Thurgau.
