Manuscript Summary
This parchment manuscript from the thirteenth century probably comes from the Cistercial Abbey of Salem and contains the foundational texts of the Cistercian order: the Exordium parvum, the Charta caritatis, and the Libellus definitionum with the determinations of the General Chapters from 1257 to 1260. The decoration includes detailed red-blue pen-flourished initials and decorated borders, and features additions through the late thirteenth century. An ownership note from Salem appears on the front pastedown.
