Manuscript Summary:
Manuscript Summary
This extensively illuminated Book of Hours from the Diocese of Utrecht was produced shortly after 1430. The book decoration, with gold initials, rinceaux, historiated initials (including Virgin and Child, angels playing music) and miniatures in the style of the Masters of the Zweder van Culemborg (the Bressanone group), shows that the manuscript is an example of Utrecht book arts. The texts – including the Office of the Virgin, penitential psalms, Office of the Dead, prayers, and lives of the saints – are predominantly intended for the use of a woman. In the seventeenth century, the manuscript belonged to W. Franciscus à Greiffenberg. (glo)
