Manuscript Summary
Nicolaus Gerung, also known as Blauenstein (ca. 1410-1478), is considered the first historian of the diocese of Basel. Secretary to Bishop Jean de Fleckenstein, he wrote the chronical of the bishops of Basel that is transmitted by this eighteenth-century paper manuscript, which was used by Johann Heinrich Brucker for his Scriptores rerum Basiliensium minores, published in 1752 (p. 3, note at the bottom of the page). Copied in a single column, the large margins contain complementary notes, in particular bibliographical notes, as well as ink drawings of the coats of arms of successive bishops (e.g., p. 8, 9). Since the list of bishops (pp. 3-28) runs through Christophe d’Utenheim (1502-1527), this is an expanded version of the one in Gerung’s chronicle. After this historical abbreviation there appear a series of more or less long excerpts taken from contemporary chronicles, such as that of the Dominicans of Colmar (pp. 31-45) or by Matthias von Neuenburg (pp. 46-60). The manuscript ends with the presentation of some saints’ lives from the Breviary of Basel, such as of St. Imier, St. German, and St. Fridolin.
