Manuscript Summary
The author of this thin paper notebook, Jean Nicolas Verger (1610-1690), belonged to an important Porrentruy bourgeois family. The main part of the manuscript contains his journal (pp. 21-114), where he recounts personal events such as the death of his wife (p. 97), but also public events that occurred in Porrentruy between 1646 and 1685. The end of the text has been bound backwards and should be read from page 114 to page 108. Before Verger’s journal appears a list of “contributions” for the benefit of soldiers serving the King of France (pp. 9-20). Before it entered the property of the cantonal school of Porrentruy (p. 1, 124), the manuscript was in the possession of one of his grandchildren, perhaps Jean François Joseph Verger (1678-1728), as suggested by the title “Remarques de feu mon gran[d-]père J. N. Verger depuis l’ann[é]e 1646 jusqu’à celle de 1675” (p. 7).
