Manuscript title: Chapter Book
Place of origin: St Gall
Date of origin: s. IX 1/3 (Bischoff); s. IX 1/4-2/4 (Mordek)
Support: Parchment
Extent: 285 pages
Format: 235-239 x 167-170 mm.
Collation: There are pages with foliation errors. The Regula S. Benedicti consists of a folded binio. Part IV was written last.
Page layout: Rule of St. Benedict (1-172): Long lines. Written area is approximately 167 x ca. 110 mm, 18 lines per page.
Writing and hands: Alemannic and Carolingian minuscule; Parts I, II, and V are written in a severe Alemannic minuscule. Parts I and V are likely written for the most part with the same hand. Even Part III, written in Carolingian minuscule, exhibits influence of Alemannic minuscule, particularly in the letter g. Part III was probably written concurrently but has incorrectly been dated by Gilissen to the tenth century. The manuscript was written in the first third of the ninth century. The text of the Rule is in a clear, severe script, on the whole very uniformly written, even if the same size is not evenly maintained; getting smaller on fol. 4r (p. 7) lines 13-18, and, hardly by the same hand, fol. 74r (p. 149) Lines 12-18 are distinct from their surroundings. The small glosses in the margin are generally written by the same hand except perhaps the italicized text on 3r (p. 5). (Bischoff)
